The cards, the camera and the voice in the room: how we decide when and how to help a team.

Every team gets unlimited free hints. Some players see that as cheating. We see it as the difference between a good hour and a frustrating one.
Asking is simple. Each room has a printed card; hold it up to the camera and the game host speaks to you through a speaker or sends a message to a screen. Hosts give the smallest hint that will move you on, usually a nudge towards where to look rather than an answer. If that is not enough, they give a stronger one.
Hosts also step in on their own when a team has been stuck on the same puzzle for more than eight minutes, or when something seems to have gone wrong, like a lock reset by mistake. They will always ask first in rooms where the team said in the briefing that they want no help.
Your final time on the leaderboard shows the number of hints next to it. A team that escapes in 52 minutes with three hints is placed differently from one that escapes in 56 with none, so purists have something to aim for.
The point of a hint is to keep the story moving. The best games feel like the team did everything themselves, even when a host helped twice.
